    Pikes Peak Ascent

I will admit I was disappointed by circumstances leading to cutting the race in half, but given the facts before us at the time (5:30 AM Saturday), absolutely the right decision was made, and none of us second-guessed it. I was just happy that we had a Plan B, which sent the Cirque volunteers to Bob's Road. By 11:00 AM when the clouds were rolling in and we heard thunder in the distance, the runners were virtually unanimous in their agreement with the change (even then, none of us knew it would clear up 2 hours later). One exception was a self-professed mountain climber who gave me a real earful, unhappy because the second half of the ascent was his strength. When I told him the summit also does not have the shelter we're used to having because of construction, he was unmoved by this; I just think he wanted to vent. I don't know what the secret to success is, but the secret to failure is to try to please everybody. As for me, I'll make up for this next year - - for the 2019 event, I want another shot at working the Cirque aid station.

AS#1 Notes: This aid station was way, way overstocked, which was fine, always better to have too much. Only used a few buckets of water; dumped the rest. First runners came through just before 7:15, had about 370 or so total coming through, and it was really nice to see the sweep and know that we were done (that came way early, even a few minutes earlier than the estimated 7:45 time). Water was the #1 request, gatorade was #2, and that was essentially it. None of the runners took any food, to my knowledge, so a few of us snarfed down bananas. Great to have LOTS of volunteers up there at AS#1, like 9 of us or so, because we had a lot of stuff to carry back down. Before the race started, we emptied out many of the 25 buckets of water that AS#3 was supposed to get, and two of our people carried those empty buckets back out to the road to be picked up. But, it turned out that nobody ever picked them up, so after we were done, Ron Ilgen brought them back down to the start in his truck. AS#1 went smoothly overall, and it was really brief but we were less than 2 miles into the race.

I personally got back to the start/finish around 8:15 or so. Everyone was busy, the 10Kers were finishing already, and I didn't find anybody to ask, so just I went out to the last turn on the course (100 yards from the finish) to do my cheerleader / course marshal with cowbell routine for all the finishers. That was fun, but I had to leave shortly after 11AM. So many runners told me how great this race was for them, and now they've got me all fired up to run this race next year, love those trails! If I don't run the Roundup next year, I would like a shot at volunteering at AS#3 up at Talon/Sundance.
